Our friend was returning to Japan with his family. Before departing, he gave us an ancestral treasure—a hand-crafted box housing a scroll penned by his grandfather. The words, from a poem, describe a Chinese monk’s ink freezing as he writes in frigid mountains. This gift inspired my own new beginning—a study of calligraphy, sumi-e painting, and eastern philosophy.
