East New York (Brooklyn, NY) Pushcarts (during the 1950s).
When I was 5-7 years old my father took my grandfather shopping to the East New York, Brooklyn pushcarts (I believe Belmont Ave.) I was asked if I wanted to go. YES! It was a world I had never seen before, with vendors hawking their products and people yelling back and forth in languages I didn’t understand, and fruit, flowers, pickles in barrels, flying past me. The aged buildings made the whole scene scary to me. I remember, so clearly, how tightly I was holding my father’s hand. In retrospect I feel very fortunate to have been able to experience this world that no longer exists.
