I used to drive to work on a road with the exotic name of Route 7 in Falls Church, Virginia. One rainy evening as I was driving home I noticed clouds in the distance that looked like a mountain laden with heavy grey clouds. The neon lights advertising the stores and the shopping center’s marquee, Culmore rose brightly out of the darkness. The whole scene reminded me of El Greco’s painting, “View of Toledo.”
I originally painted the landscape based on the structure of El Greco’s painting, but it didn’t quite capture Culmore. The more I worked on the painting the darkness of the scene in the rain took over and the bright lights glowed. In the lower left corner of the painting you can see a street light. That’s where I stopped on the road to take this photograph.
