When we asked a friend what she remembers of growing up in Scotland her answer was the stones. “That’s my Scotland.”  Giant boulders surround the gateways to alleyways, Neolithic sites, and buildings. Both in Edinburgh and Glasgow the brightly colored sienna sandstone, taken from local quarries, line the city streets. Although no evidence Scotland was a desert the yellow, gold, sienna colorings of the material used to construct its buildings give that impression.
