19th century European painters often incorporated the mystic of the harem and the exoticism that prevailed toward the Middle East into their paintings. As a challenge to me, I analyzed how the painting “The Reception” (aka Lady Receiving Visitors, Introduction to the Harem) by Frederick John Lewis (1873) was constructed and then broke it down into its main sections.
